TRIP REPORT

Mountain Biking Bhutan - Trails in the Himalayan Kingdom

Mountain Biking - Bhutan & the Himalayas

October 2007 saw the first Wilderness Journeys mountain biking group wheel into the fabled Kingdom of Bhutan. What an amazing and memorable two weeks it was!

With so much of the country ripe for mountain bike exploration, plenty of first descents were bagged as we deviated from the itinerary where nature would allow. The mountain biking highlight was arguably another incredible singletrack descent in the Punakha Valley. This has to be one of the best trails I have ridden anywhere, combing fast flowing bends with the odd technical challenge.

On and off the trails, as ever, the country was full of surprises and enchantment. Tea with the General; coffee with the hospital director and beer at the school (teachers only!) were just some of the highlights. Peter will forever be remembered in Bhutanese folklore for his taming of a levithan yak at the Pele La pass. Never has a bicycle bell been so handy!

Please do have a look at the photo gallery which includes some of the images from the 2007 trip.
